Short Term Scientific Mission (05/2023)

Working group 5 – Forest Ecology

Open call for Project Proposals, Evaluation of proposals starts on: 23rd May, 2023

The call will remain open until all funds are allocated, but we will start to evaluate proposals on 23rd May 2023, so please submit soon!

STSM Grants fund visits by:

  • The PhD Student or
  • Postdoctoral fellow or
  • Someone else, employed by an instutition, organization of legal entity which has within its remit a clear association with performing research
  • Max. 4500 € per person (per STSM)
  • STSMs visit lasting approx. 1-3 months and should end until the end of September
  • 4-5 STSMs in 2023
Do you have an idea for a project on the use of 3D close range technologies for forest ecology and would like to host a visitor to help you with the work?
We would like to hear from you!

Please send us 300- 400 words outlining the project and data available, anticipated outputs, the timeframe of the STSM, and your (short) CV or website. If you have a visitor in mind please send us their CV too; if not we will advertise selected projects across the COST action.

We want to fund projects clearly focussing on addressing ecological questions, they should be feasible within the timeframe proposed, and participants should commit to supporting the visitor during and after the STSM to achieve the outputs.

Aim & Objectives Precision forestry is an approach to forest management that leverages advanced technologies to enhance decision-making processes and optimize forest operations. LiDAR technologies enable detailed measurements of tree height, canopy density, stem diameter, and even understory vegetation, allowing for a more precise understanding of forest composition and health. By capturing data at a...

TreeAI4Species Data Science Competition is a global challenge to develop innovative algorithms for identifying tree species using high-resolution aerial imagery. This competition is an opportunity for data scientists, researchers, and AI practitioners to push the boundaries of remote sensing and AI applications in forestry. The results of this competition will contribute to the development of scalable,...
